Hey guys and dolls! This crochet chunky sweater is very easy to make, perfect for even the beginner crocheter. Once you how how to do basic crochet stitches such as the slip stitch and half double crochet you will fly through this project.
Materials needed:
Weight 4 yarn of your choice.
7.5mm crochet hook. This size hook is pretty easy to come by here in Ireland but I realize elsewhere some people have had difficulties finding one, so you can use and 8mm crochet hook. There will be no big difference in sizing.
5mm crochet hook.
Front/Back panels (both the same):
Using your 7.5mm or 8mm crochet hook
Ch 52 for a small/medium or 56 for a medium/large.
Row 1: *Slip stitch into the 2nd ch from hook, hdc into next st. Repeat from * to end of row. You will end this row with a slip stitch. Turn.
Row 2: Ch1 (not counted as a stitch). *Hdc into next stitch, slip st into the next stitch. Repeat from * to end. You will end this row with a hdc.
Repeat these last two rows over and over again until the piece measures from your collar bone to your hip. I did about 50 rows.
Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in all ends. Put to one side.
Sleeves:
Change to your 5mm crochet hook.
Ch 12. Hdc into 2nd ch from hook. Hdc to end of row. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in the back loops only to end of row. Turn. Repeat this row until the piece is big enough to go around your wrist. This will be the cuff of your sleeve. I did 18 rows.
Next row: Ch 1 and make 45 single crochets along the long edge of the ribbing.
Next row: Change back to your 7.5mm/8mm hook. Ch 1, *slip stitch into next st, hdc into the next st. Repeat from * to end of row. You will end this row with a slip stitch.
Next row: Ch 1, * hdc into next st, slip stitch into the next st. Repeat from * to end of row. You will end this row with a hdc.
Repeat last 2 rows until your sleeves is long enough to reach from your shoulder to your wrist. Then fold the sleeve lengthwise and sew/ slip st/ single crochet the side of sleeve closed. Repeat all these sleeps again for your second sleeve.
Assembly:
Place front panel on top of the back panel. Arrange the sleeve to the top of the sweater where the shoulders will be. Make sure sleeve seams are facing downwards. Attach yarn to the bottom right hand corner of your sweater and sew the front and back panels together. Continue sewing until you reach the sleeves and then sew the sleeves to the top.
Then attach yarn to top corner of sweater and sew in about 5 inches. This will be your shoulder area/neck line. Repeat on the other shoulder.
Now turn your sweater inside out.
Attach yarn to corner of neckline and hdc around the neckline. Slip stitch to first hdc to close round. Then ch 1 and hdc in back loops only all the way around. Repeat this for another 10 rows.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
I also have a YouTube channel with this tutorial if you want to check it out.
Can i use 7mm hook??
Hell, if you want to then nobody’s gonna stop u.
Hi I watched your video on you tube and as a fairly new crocheter (bout 3 years) I found your pattern really easy to use.
Can I use a size 6mm crochet hook
If you do you will get a much smaller garment than the pattern is written for. I would get the right hooks. *S*
kindly i need your help….
I completed the front & the back of the sweater and i am starting now with the Sleeves with 18 rows but i can’t do 45 single crochet .
do you increase stitches or what i am doing wrong??
As the pattern tells you to make the ribbing to fit your wrists I don’t think 45 is correct, it will depend on how many rows you had to do. Just crochet onto each row end perhaps.
Just curious how a 4 weight yarn makes a chunky sweater? Thanks
Laura, since the usual hook size for #4 yarn is a 5.0 or 5.5 the fact we are using a 7.5 or 8.0 hook will make a more open and loose stitch.
And I think it is the sls/hdc rotatation that provides a chunky look. *S*
Depends on the needle
What did you end up doing, I’m having trouble with the sleeves too…. what I have will be too skinning for the top of my arm, and I don’t want to make them wider at the wrist…
Hi – hoping you’ll see this in a timely manner. A friend of mine wants to make this but isn’t knowledgeable about yarn weights, and I’m American and I never assume terms mean the same both places. Could you define “Weight 4” please? The yarn she wants to use is DK weight. Thank you!
This was a few months ago so not sure if you still need it, weight 4 yarn refers to the thickness of the yarn. 500 g refers to how much of it you need. On the wrapper of a skein of yarn it should give you a weight. So if it says for ex. 200 g on it, you will need two and a half skeins. Sorry if that didn’t make sense.

4 weight is worsted. If she uses DK the sweater will come out smaller and I think it would be airy with holes in it too.
How many stiches for XL to XXL
Hi Carrie,
Love the sweater and plan to try.
Can you suggest the gauge for this sweater?
Thanks.
How much yarn is needed for a small?
We need to know how much yardage or number of skeins

A new crocheter
Can you please tell us how many yards of yarn for all the sizes. That would be helpful. Thanks. I love the simplicity of this pattern. Your tutorial is great too.
Hey, i love this pattern but i can’t seem to find where you specify how much yarn is needed. Could you let me know how many meters/ how many skeins you need for a medium/large?
This is a beautiful sweater. I really like it and would love to make it. What yarn did you use for this sweater? I want to make sure that I purchase the right yarn for this project so that it turns out as nice as yours.
How many stitches for xl size or xxl

How many stitches for an x large sweater.
Hi, I was wondering how much wool is needed for this project.
Many thanks
I make this jumper but crocheted in the back loops unintentionally but now it has a gorgeous rib effect! I recommend trying 🙂
Is there a gauge for this pattern?
