This crochet tote bag can be used anywhere, from pottering around at the farmers market, strolling along the beach or used for groceries. It really is versatile.

The bag is simply made by crocheting one big long rectangle using a fairly easy to follow six row repeat. Once you are finished crocheting the rectangle we simply fold the corners in creating a sort of origami bag. Its a pretty genius way of constructing a bag!

YARN

This project uses Drops Paris (shade 17). The yarn is spun from multiple thin strands of 100% cotton. It is a beautiful soft yarn yet still holds its shape, making it perfect for bag making.

Drops Paris is a weight 4 cotton yarn, however any weight 4 yarn will work fine for this project but i do suggest you use a cotton yarn.

MATERIALS:

Yarn – Drops Paris – weight 4/worsted/aran/10 ply cotton yarn.

Approximately 800 meters is needed to make this bag.

4 mm crochet hook.

Measuring tape.

Yarn needle.

STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

FPTC = front post treble crochet

slst = slip stitch

rep = repeat

SPECIAL STITCHES:

DC/FPTC2tog: yarn over, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up loop, yo draw through 2 loops, yo twice, insert hook around post of 3rd dc 2 rows below and draw up loop, yo draw through 2 loops, yo draw through 2 loops, yo draw through 3 loops

FPTC/TC2tog: yo twice, insert hook around same post as last FPTC, yo draw up loop, yo draw through 2 loops, yo insert hook into next sc, draw up loop, yo draw through 2 loops, yo draw through 3 loops.

MEASUREMENTS

Bag measures roughly 15 inches wide and 13 inches high to the highest point. To change the height of bag you need to chain less at your foundation row. The stitch multiple is 6+3. To chain the width of bag you will do less rows. To get the preferred width of bag you will crochet a long rectangle that is 3 times the width you want.

Row 8: ch 1, sc in next 6 sts, ch 1, skip over ch1-sp, *sc in next 5 sts, ch 1, skip over ch1-sp, rep from * across ending row with 6 sc. Turn.

Row 9: ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), *dc/FPTC2tog, dc in next 3 sc, FPTC/TC2tog, ch 1, skip over ch1-sp, rep from * ending last rep at dc/FPTC2tog, dc in next 3 sc, FPTC/TC2tog, dc in last sc. Turn.

Row 10 – 12: ch 1, sc in next 6 sts, ch 1 skip over ch1sp, *sc in next 5 sts, ch 1, skip over ch1-sp, rep from * across ending row with 6 sc. Turn.

Repeat rows 7-12 until piece measures 45 inches long. You are essentially crocheting a rectangle that is 3 times longer than you want the width of your bag. I wanted a width of 15 inches so I crocheted 45 inches (45/3=15).

Fasten off and weave in ends.

SEWING THE BAG TOGETHER

Lay your rectangle out flat on a hard surface with the wrong side facing up. Now fold over the bottom left hand corner to reach the top forming a triangle shape. Then fold the top right hand corner over towards the bottom creating another triangle.

Now bring the bottom right hand point over to meet the left point. With your yarn needle sew up from the bottom left point up towards centre of bag. Fasten off and sew on the other side of bag.

Now we are going to attach our yarn to the right point:

Ch 1, sc all the way around the top edge of bag. Slst to first sc to close the round.

Next round: ch 3, slst in first ch, slst in next sc, *sc in next st, ch 3, slst in first ch, slst in next sc, rep from * all the way around the entire top edge of bag.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

STRAP:

Leaving about 4 inches of a tail, CH 9

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch to end. Turn.

Row 2: ch 1, sc in each st to end. Turn.

Rep row 2 until strap measures 13-14 long. Fasten off leaving a long tail. Add or subtract rows for a longer/shorter strap.

Now using your yarn needle sew on end of the strap to one of the points of the bag, the sew the other end of the strap to the other point.

You are now finished your Crochet Market Tote Bag!!
