Learn to crochet this very easy, chunky, oversized crochet cardigan. Designed to have a ribbed texture, similar to the knit stitch, and oversized, this cardigan is sure to get you through Fall and Winter. The yarn I used was a bulky weight so in all honesty I would say this piece is more of a jacket than a cardigan, but the best thing about it is it has a huge hood.

The cardigan is constructed using seven panels, the back, two fronts, two sleeves and two identical panels for the hood. Each of these panels are worked sideways.

I wanted a cardigan that was oversized and chunky but if you want a more fitted or less oversized cardigan simply do less rows on each panel.

YARN

**This post contains affiliated links for which I make a very small commission. It is of no extra cost to you but it does help me out a great deal**

The yarn I used to make this crochet cardigan was Stylecraft Special Chunky in the shade Parchment. This yarn is a weight 5 or bulky/chunky acrylic yarn that comes in a huge variety of colors so I’m sure there’s a shade to suit everyone.

Stylecraft Special Chunky is an extra warm yarn suitable for a wide range of products and it’s especially perfect for this crochet cardigan. Even though it is made from 100% acrylic it is softer and so much more less scratchy that any other regular acrylic yarns on the market. From beautiful vintage shades to more vibrant shades, there is something for everyone and every season.

Next lay your entire cardigan out flat with the wrong side facing up. With a stitch marker marker the middle of a sleeve, then line that stitch marker up with a shoulder seam. Using a yarn needle and long tail seam sleeve to cardigan. Repeat on the other side. Then fold cardigan over and seam along under edge of sleeve and down along the side of cardigan. Repeat on the other side.

Turn cardigan right side out.

Place your hood in place and seam to the body of the cardigan.

Next attach yarn to the bottom inner edge of cardigan and do 7 rows of regular slsts all the way around the inner edge and around hood.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

You are now finished!

Lovely pattern, thank you! Quick question – if Iwwanted a pull-ober hoodie, could I make two of the back panels, and still be able to attach the hood…?

This is a great cardigan. Can’t wait to start making it. All your patterns are great. I always had trouble with sewing sleeves on but once I saw how you did it. I had no more problems. Great job Carrie

Wonderful cardigan. I used the same yarn, size L length and S width and needed 10 full balls. It’s perfect! I added buttons for closure. I even ordered another 10 to start all over again! Thanks for the great pattern.
