Learn to crochet this quick and easy crochet cardigan made from just two identical panels. The Ethniu Cardigan is the perfect cardigan to throw over your shoulders during those cool summer evenings.

This free written pattern is also accompanied with a step-by-step video tutorial. Please scroll down to view it.

When designing the Ethniu Cardigan I wanted something that required very little seaming. I think one of the most dreading parts about crocheting any type of garment is the endless stitching and weaving. So with my pen and paper I came up with this little beauty using just two identical panels that requires just a little seaming at the back to join both panels. Pretty smart I think!

I used Drops Safran for this cardigan and I must say I love this yarn. It has wonderful drape and it’s lightweight feel makes it perfect for summer. Although it’s a sport weight yarn, I paired it with a bigger hook for a quicker finish and a more airy feel.

The pattern uses simple and basic stitches throughout. I love that the entire pattern is a two row repeat and you know how I love mindless project in front of the tv!

CONSTRUCTION

So how is the cardigan constructed you may ask? Well, firstly we begin at the bottom of the sleeve and work a few rows of that until we get to our sleeve length. Then we will make a number of chains at each end of the sleeve, one length of chain being the back, and the other length of chain being the front panel. We will crochet in pattern for a certain number of rows until we fasten off. We will then go ahead and make another piece the same way. Once both pieces are crocheted, we will line the pieces side by side and seam a few stitches to form the back panel while the other half is left open creating two front panels.

    Hello there,
I would like to know the measurements (length) of the sleeves from the beginning to just before you added the 72 chains on either side. I have rather long arms and want to how long the sleeves were in your video before you added the front/back panel.

Kivia, perhaps you should try using a smaller hook, did you use lightweight yarn?
Sport weight yarn is suggested and it’s almost like baby yarn. I hope this helps.

I remember crocheting a sweater years ago that also was HUGE at the finish. Now I pay close attention to the gage, usually printed at beginning of pattern). Change your hook or yarn, if needed. I also watch and measure as I’m crocheting. Good luck!!! 👍

What helps me is is measuring the Length and Width of my favorite comfy Sweater or Jacket and my own Body measurements (Arm-length, Shoulder to Shoulder, Armpit to Hip length, Waist etc. And finding a good medium. Then making a template with my measurements in the shape of my sweater/ jacket. Also very important a Sample Gauge /Swatch as my Guide. If you draw Your true measurements on a piece of wrapping paper, you’ll always have a perfect template for future projects.
