Learn how to crochet the puff shell stitch with this free written pattern and easy to follow step by step video tutorial. This beautiful stitch creates the most beautiful texture and will look beautiful on anything you make.

I have been thinking for some time now to start a crochet stitch series and to kick off I have the Crochet Puff and Shell Stitch. If you are a lover of texture, this stitch is definitely for you.

This stitch pattern follows a two row repeat and is perfect for blankets, throws and even for garments. The possibilities are endless.

In the photo above I used Rico Design Colour Coated Cotton in the shade Partie. It is a weight 3 or DK yarn that is a cotton chainette. I immediately fell in love with this color when I first found it. Can you imagine using this yarn and stitch and creating a beautiful baby blanket? How pretty would that be?

With that said however, any weight or fibre of yarn will work perfectly with this stitch, but make sure to use your yarn’s recommended hook size. This stitch will look lovely worked in a solid or multicolor yarn, so play around with some of these ideas.

As I said earlier, this stitch pattern uses only a two row repeat so it’s pretty easy to remember and the the hang of it quite quickly. If you know how to crochet the basics like the single crochet and double crochet you will have no problem at all.

STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

TPST = triple puff stitch

ch-sp = chain space

st(s) = stitch(es)

SPECIAL STITCHES: Triple Puff Stitch (TPST): yo, insert hook into designated st, pull up loop (5 times), yo pull through 11 loops, ch 2, yo insert hook into same stitch, pull up loop (5 times), yo pull through 11 loops, ch 2, yo, insert hook into same st again, pull up loop (5 times), yo pull through 11 loops, ch 1.

SHELL STITCH: 5 dc in designated stitch.

YARN

In the sample swatch I used Rico Design Colour Coated Cotton in the shade Partie. It is a Dk or light, weight 3 yarn made from a blend of cotton and acrylic. It comes in many stylish colors that will certainly compliment anything you make. This yarn is perfect for all sorts of garments as it is light and breathable but it would also make stunning baby blankets and throws.

But of course any yarn or weight of yarn will certainly work for this stitch pattern as long as you stitch with your yarn’s recommended hook size.
