Crochet Basketweave Beanie

Learn to crochet this quick and easy crochet basketweave beanie. This pattern is quick and easy to make and a perfect pattern to follow along in front of the tv.

I recently made the Crochet Basketweave Sweater and you guys absolutely loved it so I thought to myself why not make a matching hat. I must say this hat is quickly becoming one of my favourite hats (so far!). The textured stitch reminds me of the knit basketweave stitch, wouldn’t you agree?!

The hat is worked from the bottom up. Firstly we begin crocheting the bottom ribbed band, then slip stitch the two ends to create a circle. We then crochet along the edge of the ribbing and work in rounds until we are satisfied with the height of the beanie. At the end we just weave the long tail through each stitch, pull tail tight, secure with a stitch or two and we are finished.

YARN

The yarn I used to make this beanie was Red Heart Soft. This was my first time using this yarn and I must say I absolutely love it. When they say soft, they literally mean soft!

It comes in a huge variety of colors so I’m sure their is a shade for everyone. The yarn is acrylic weight 4 yarn but it’s a very soft acrylic. You can however use any yarn you like but please keep in mind of the stitch multiples stated in the pattern.

SIZING

I designed this hat to fit an adult sized hat. The stitch count I give is only a guide and depends on the yarn you use as well as your tension. To make other sizes I would suggest you crochet the ribbed band until it is long enough to go around your head, a child’s head, a baby’s head, whoever it is for, but keep in mind that the stitch count of the main body of the hat is in multiples of 6.

So yes, you can use any weight yarn or hook as long as you stick to the above information.

MATERIALS

Yarn – Red Heart Soft – weight 4/aran/10 ply yarn

Approximately 167m/100g

6mm crochet hook

Yarn needle

Pom pom (optional)

STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS

Ch = chain

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

dc2tog = double crochet 2 together

FPDC = front post double crochet

BPDC = back post double crochet

BLO =. back loop only

rep = repeat

slst = slip stitch

CROCHET BASKETWEAVE BEANIE HAT PATTERN

Ch 8

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch to end. Turn.

Row 2: ch 1, sc in each stitch working into BLO. Turn.

Repeat row 2 until you have a total of 54 rows. Turn. Work more or less rows here for a smaller/bigger beanie hat.

Next slst the two ends together to create a circle.

Main body worked in multiples of 6

Next round: ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout) make 53 dc around the top of the ribbed edge. Slst to top of ch 3 to close round.

Next round: ch 3, FPDC in next 2 sts, BPDC in next 3 sts, *FPDC in next 3 sts, BPDC in next 3 sts, rep from * around. Slst to top of ch 3 to close round.

Next round: ch 3, BPDC in next 2 sts, FPDC in next 3 sts, *BPDC in next 3 sts, FPDC in next 3 sts, rep from * around. Slst to top of ch 3 to close round.

Repeat last 2 rounds until you beanie hat has a height of 9 inches from the bottom edge of the ribbed brim. You can add more rows here if you want a slouchier hat.

Next round: ch 3, dc2tog, *dc in next stitch, dc2tog, rep from * all the way around. Slst to ch 3 to close round.

Fasten off leaving a long tail.

With your yarn needle and long tail, weave in and out of every stitch all the way around. Then pull your tail tightly so the top of the beanie hat closes. Secure with a few stitches, add a pom pom and you are finished your crochet basketweave beanie hat.
