Over the last few weeks I’ve had so many requests to make a crochet shawl with pockets, so here is my little interpretation of this new Fall favorite.

crochet shawl with pockets pattern

The crochet shawl is designed width wise, so the initial chain you make will be the length of your shawl. I’ve added some ribbed detail around the neckline and of course some fringe on the ends. Pockets are added towards the end.

Yarn

The yarn I used is So Crafty Aran. I believe this is an Aldi own brand. I realize Aldi in another country may not sell this yarn or any yarn for that matter but any weight 4 yarn will do. The yarn I used was a blend of acrylic and wool.

crochet shawl pattern

Measurements

The crochet shawl measures approximately 56 inches long and 16 inches wide. Add more length to the initial chain if needed as long as your stitch multiple is 7. Add more rows for more width.

Stitches & Abbreviations

Ch = chain

Sc = single crochet

Hdc = half double crochet

Dc = double crochet

FPTR = front post treble

FPDC = front post double crochet

BPDC = back post double crochet

BLO = back loop only

Ch-sp = chain space

This pattern uses standard US crochet terms.

Crochet Shawl With Pockets Pattern

Ch 196

Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, dc to end. Turn.

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc),* fpdc around next st, bpdc around next, repeat from * across, placing a dc in last st . Turn

Rows 3-6: repeat row 2.

Row 7: ch 1, sc across to end of row. Turn

Row 8: ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 3, skip 3, sc in next, ch 2, skip 2, sc in next st, repeat from * across ending row with ch 3, skip 3 sc in last st. Turn.

Row 9: Ch 3, *3dc in ch3-sp, dc in next sc, 2dc in next ch2-sp, dc in next sc, rep from * across ending with 3dc in last ch3-sp, dc in last sc. Turn.

Row 10: ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 3, skip 3, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip 2, sc in next dc, repeat from * across ending row with ch 3, skip 3, sc on top of turning chain. Turn

Row 11: Ch 3, *3dc in ch3-sp, FPTR around next dc in 2nd row below, 2dc in ch2-sp, FPTR around next dc in 2nd row below, repeat from * across ending with 3dc in ch3-sp, dc in last sc. Turn.

Row 12: ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 3, skip 3, sc in next st, ch 2, skip 2, sc in next st, repeat from * across ending with ch 3, skip 3, sc on top of turning chain. Turn.

Row 13: Ch 3, *3dc in ch3-sp, FPTR around next FPTR in 2nd row below, 2dc in ch2-sp, FPTR around next FPTR in 2nd row below, repeat from * across ending row with 3 dc in ch3-sp, dc in last sc.

REPEAT ROWS 12-13 UNTIL PIECE IS 16 INCHES WIDE

Next row: Ch 1, sc in every stitch across. Cut yarn and fasten off.

For the fringe cut a bunch of yarn about 20 inches long. Take 6 strands and on the short edge of the shawl feed the strands through the turning chain of every “square”. Continue adding fringe all the way across the entire short edge of the shawl.

Pockets:

For the pockets we will be making them vertically, which means the initial chain we make will determine the depth of your pocket. Add or subtract chains here according to preference.

Ch 30

Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc across. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in BLO across the row. Turn.

Repeat row 2 until the pocket is 8 inches wide.

Cut yarn and fasten off leaving a long tail. Using a yarn needle, sew the pocket towards the bottom of the shawl. For reference I stitched mine about 2 squares away from the fringe edge.

You are now finished your crochet shawl with pockets. If you are more of a visual learner you can follow my step by step youtube video.

        Me too! I think you can fix it by adding a stitch in row 9. Instead of this: “Row 9: Ch 3, *3dc in ch3-sp,” it’s actually this: Row 9: Ch 3, *3dc in ch2-sp.

        This is great, thank you for sharing this. I would like to say, if you haven’t done it, you should try a foundation double crochet chain for this type of project. If you have to chain 196 and then work into it, it’s well worth it.

          This is what I want to do. The chain in the pattern is ch 196 or multiple of 7, then first stitch in 4th chain from hook, so should I do multiple of 7, minus 4?

        Row 3= Row 2
        Row 4=Row 2
        Row 5=Row 2
        Row 6=Row 2
        I write them down on a piece of paper and cross them off one by one so I don;t do too many rows…

      That’s the same issue I’m having. Then when I get to the ch3, ch2 row, it doesn’t seem to add up to the correct number of stitches. If I start with ch196, crochet into ch4, that’s 192ch, plus 1 for the first chain. 193 doesn’t divide evenly by 7

    I have a question-how many stitches do you end up with in row 2? I added 35 stitches to the original chain. a multiple of 7, as stated. But now I have an odd number of stitches. If I had started with 196 I would end up with an even amount of stitches. Should rows 2 through 6 be even or odd number of stitches, including the chain 3 as a stitch. Thank you for any help you can provide.

    I appreciate the video. I used thicker yarn, so fewer stitches needed. Bernat Blanket and Big Twist Cuddle. They are 6 thickness, using L Hook. I put pocket inside pocket. I added to middle of collar and did hood. I then went around the hood to bring the edges in, then extended the middle of the back. On later versions, I started with the shawl part adding at least 28 stitches so allow for pockets (14 on each end, but 21 each better). I did back post 21 on each end to allow folding up with single crochet. Five rows of the double crochet was wide enough pocket. At the bottom, after closing pockets, start at the back and extend continuing with the 2 and 3 chains, then come back double crochet like usual. Four or five rows was enough extra.

    For the first edge, can close pocket with single crochet continue across and close other pocket. Then double crochet across, Contine front and back like initial start 2 to 4 rows. This makes the collar.

    I have pictures if you’d like. I made them for all ladies and girls in the family for Christmas. Remember, I have thicker yarn, so rows andextra stitches would be different for thinner yarn.

    I just finished my shawl with pockets, and I love it. Great idea for Christmas presents next year! Thank you!

    Loving this so far. It actually is easy to follow, and this is coming from someone that usually needs a chart to follow. I’ve done 22 rows so far, and it’s laying flat and soft. I tend to lose or add stitches, but so far it’s working great. For others needing to know how many sc in row 2, 1 have 193. Many thanks for this pattern!!

    Thank you thank you thank you a million billion times for a FABULOUS pattern, but most of all for your EXTREMELY helpful and illustrative video, you RULE!! I have been crocheting for many decades now, and was always stumped at the written FPDC, it just didn’t register in my feeble brain, but your fabulous video just rocked it right home and I can’t help but wonder how stupid can I possibly be??? (That’s a rhetorical question!) At any rate, my friend found your pattern and asked me if it would be ‘easy’….ha! I have now got the first one almost done and 2 more to go! THANKS AGAIN!!!!

    How long should the shawl be? I only have #3 yarn so I may have to chain differently to get the same length.

    Thank you for your fabulous patterns, I have used your Harvest Moon and your Crochet Shawl with Pockets. Both worked up beautifully. Thank you so much for your creativity and your generous sharing spirit. Nine shawls done for Christmas!!!

    I’m just now finishing my second Crochet Shawl with Pockets. Whoda thought this would be such a HUGE hit with my East Coast friends! the length is perfect and its an easy yet interesting pattern. I used a heavy yarn, Joann Fabrics Big Twist, Heather (3 skeins per shawl). The weight and length are perfect for a cold climate. I added doggie faces that I crocheted with a fingerling yarn. Added just enough pizazz to offset the solid color. Thanks again to Carrie for a wonderful pattern. Believe me, your cold weather friends will love it.

    I came cross your video when I was looking for a pocket shawl to crochet for a friend undergoing chemo treatment for breast cancer. This beginner crocheter found your video very easy to follow, which I truly appreciate!

    I posted a picture of the shawl on my FB page and everyone loved it. I decided to treat myself to one, and did it in a variegated yarn, with a slightly larger hook. I absolutely love it and am looking forward to some slightly cooler weather so I can wear it. I’m now in the process of making another one for a friend because she loves it so much!

    Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us!

    I’ve been wanting to make shawls for some time. I’d like a child’s pattern as well.
