Over the last few weeks I’ve had so many requests to make a crochet shawl with pockets, so here is my little interpretation of this new Fall favorite.

The crochet shawl is designed width wise, so the initial chain you make will be the length of your shawl. I’ve added some ribbed detail around the neckline and of course some fringe on the ends. Pockets are added towards the end.
Yarn
The yarn I used is So Crafty Aran. I believe this is an Aldi own brand. I realize Aldi in another country may not sell this yarn or any yarn for that matter but any weight 4 yarn will do. The yarn I used was a blend of acrylic and wool.

Measurements
The crochet shawl measures approximately 56 inches long and 16 inches wide. Add more length to the initial chain if needed as long as your stitch multiple is 7. Add more rows for more width.
Stitches & Abbreviations
Ch = chain
Sc = single crochet
Hdc = half double crochet
Dc = double crochet
FPTR = front post treble
FPDC = front post double crochet
BPDC = back post double crochet
BLO = back loop only
Ch-sp = chain space
This pattern uses standard US crochet terms.

Crochet Shawl With Pockets Pattern
Ch 196
Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, dc to end. Turn.
Row 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc),* fpdc around next st, bpdc around next, repeat from * across, placing a dc in last st . Turn
Rows 3-6: repeat row 2.
Row 7: ch 1, sc across to end of row. Turn
Row 8: ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 3, skip 3, sc in next, ch 2, skip 2, sc in next st, repeat from * across ending row with ch 3, skip 3 sc in last st. Turn.
Row 9: Ch 3, *3dc in ch3-sp, dc in next sc, 2dc in next ch2-sp, dc in next sc, rep from * across ending with 3dc in last ch3-sp, dc in last sc. Turn.
Row 10: ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 3, skip 3, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip 2, sc in next dc, repeat from * across ending row with ch 3, skip 3, sc on top of turning chain. Turn
Row 11: Ch 3, *3dc in ch3-sp, FPTR around next dc in 2nd row below, 2dc in ch2-sp, FPTR around next dc in 2nd row below, repeat from * across ending with 3dc in ch3-sp, dc in last sc. Turn.
Row 12: ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 3, skip 3, sc in next st, ch 2, skip 2, sc in next st, repeat from * across ending with ch 3, skip 3, sc on top of turning chain. Turn.
Row 13: Ch 3, *3dc in ch3-sp, FPTR around next FPTR in 2nd row below, 2dc in ch2-sp, FPTR around next FPTR in 2nd row below, repeat from * across ending row with 3 dc in ch3-sp, dc in last sc.
REPEAT ROWS 12-13 UNTIL PIECE IS 16 INCHES WIDE
Next row: Ch 1, sc in every stitch across. Cut yarn and fasten off.
For the fringe cut a bunch of yarn about 20 inches long. Take 6 strands and on the short edge of the shawl feed the strands through the turning chain of every “square”. Continue adding fringe all the way across the entire short edge of the shawl.
Pockets:
For the pockets we will be making them vertically, which means the initial chain we make will determine the depth of your pocket. Add or subtract chains here according to preference.
Ch 30
Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc across. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in BLO across the row. Turn.
Repeat row 2 until the pocket is 8 inches wide.
Cut yarn and fasten off leaving a long tail. Using a yarn needle, sew the pocket towards the bottom of the shawl. For reference I stitched mine about 2 squares away from the fringe edge.
You are now finished your crochet shawl with pockets. If you are more of a visual learner you can follow my step by step youtube video.
Carrie, I love all of your patterns, and once again, you don’t disappoint. This shawl is a winner! Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your talent!
My first time seeing your great work. I love this shawl. I can’t wait to make this. Looking forward to your other works.
This is sooooo cute! I can’t wait to make it, thanks for sharing it!! 🥰
This Shawl is beautiful. I’m getting ready to make this Shawl. I need to know how many yards I need please.
Thank You
You need 4-10 ply yarn 400g/800m
Thank you so much. Can,t wait to make this.
Does anybody know how many yards does shawl with pockets would take
Approx 900 yards of weight yarn.
Thank you so much for the pattern. I love it. Going to try and make it for my sister I hope that you have a wonderful evening you Thank you and God Bless
Just finished the pocket shawl for a lady with cancer. It turned out lovely, she was really pleased with it.
I love the pattern, so easy to glow your tutorial. Thank you Carrie for sharing your beautiful pattern. 😍♥️
Now I think I earned the time to make myself one if your cardigans. So hard to choose,. they’re all beautiful., Thank you once again, your an amazing young lady.
I’m making this now and I love it but I’m afraid I will run out of yarn..how much is needed?
If I need to make this shawl longer than 196 what are the increments to extend the length?
Stitch multiples of 7.
Approx 900 yards of weight 4 yarn.
I absolutely live tjus, im working on 1 now. I was wondering what the chain multiple is. The 196 chain isn’t quite long enough for me, but it will fit my daughter’s.
Thank you so much
multiple of seven
Hi Carrie, I am a newbie. I love the shawl with pockets and am hoping I can “buy a pdf copy without all the Ads. Please advise if that’s possible and how to obtain. Thank you!
How many sc should I have in row 7 ? I’m missing somewhere and I’ve started the pattern 3 times. Please help. Thank you
I found I have 194 sc in total across in row 7.
How many stitches on row 7? I,m ending row 8 with chain 2, skip 2..
Me too! I end with chain 2, sk 2, sc
I think I’m just going to continue & hope for the best.
Me too! I think you can fix it by adding a stitch in row 9. Instead of this: “Row 9: Ch 3, *3dc in ch3-sp,” it’s actually this: Row 9: Ch 3, *3dc in ch2-sp.
Love the shawl! I am relatively new to crochet but this will be added to my list of things to do. How many skeins does this take?
I needed a little bit of the 4th skein of baby yarn(362 yds per skein)
Hey! I’m trying this pattern for the first time and I am confused by the instructions in row 11. Can you help?
Thank you for this pattern. I am making it in Bernat baby yarn antique white. I may leave off the fringe to make the shawl a little more tailored look. I plan to give it to my daughter in law, if she will use it. (If not, I will keep it!)
This is so cute. Can’t wait to make it.
Is the Aran 10 ply yarn you used for the shawl, cotton or a wool blend?
Is it available in the USA?
I’d love to try this. It’s lovely.
This is great, thank you for sharing this. I would like to say, if you haven’t done it, you should try a foundation double crochet chain for this type of project. If you have to chain 196 and then work into it, it’s well worth it.
This is what I want to do. The chain in the pattern is ch 196 or multiple of 7, then first stitch in 4th chain from hook, so should I do multiple of 7, minus 4?
This is my first time watching your tutorial, you make it so easy to follow. Thank you. I will be making these shawls with pockets for my daughters and granddaughters.
Hi- I can’t find how many skeins of yarn to purchase for this project. Sorry if I missed it. Just wanted to purchase enough to finish. Thanks! Can’t wait to make this for a friend.
Me too how many yards ?
on rows 2 – 6, am I doing a bpdc on the chain 3 of the previous round?
I”m confused about that as well! I did the bpfp ect and now I’m stuck. What happens in rows 3 to 6?
Just do Row 2…this helps me:
Row 3= Row 2
Row 4=Row 2
Row 5=Row 2
Row 6=Row 2
I write them down on a piece of paper and cross them off one by one so I don;t do too many rows…
I did a hdc in the turning chains for rows 2-6. Seems like that step was missing in the pattern.
Stuck on row 11. FPTRB round next dc 2nd row down. FPTRB, no problems, but where to place hook for round next dc, 2nd row below.
Not a YouTuber, can you do pictures of how stitches done on a swatch and longer describing what to do?
Sorry, not understanding
You alternate fpdc badc fpdc bpdc. It makes a ribbed collar.
This is so cute and as I watched your video tutorial it was so very easy to follow. Thank you so much for this lovely pattern Carrie I will be making this beautiful pocket shawl for sure.
Repeat bpfp as you did in row 2. Hope that helps!
Thank you for sharing your pattern! I can’t wait to start it. I have a question, it says row 3 -6 to repeat row 2. The picture looks like the 3rd row should start with bpdc then fpdc to create the ribs. How many DC should I have in the 1st row?
Thank you
That’s the same issue I’m having. Then when I get to the ch3, ch2 row, it doesn’t seem to add up to the correct number of stitches. If I start with ch196, crochet into ch4, that’s 192ch, plus 1 for the first chain. 193 doesn’t divide evenly by 7
Hi love the look of this pattern but I need help with st count for rows because reading thr pattern it looks like I’m skipping stitches at the end of the rows and that’s making the pocket shawl go inwards.. perhaps how the row begins and ends would be helpful
Is this made with bulky yarn 5 or worsted weight 4?
If 4, how much yarn is needed.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Believe it’s a weight 4 pattern, uses about 800 meters.
Hi Carrie
Just wanted to let you know I’ve subscribed to your patterns lots of times. Never get the e mail though ( where it says check your e mail etc) afterni click the subscribe button.
Can you help please, love your patterns & am missing them because not not getting emails from you.
Thanks, Lorraine
In the pattern after row 13 you say to repeat until 16 inches, then chain across and finish off
Don’t you have a border on both ends
This just ends
I couldn’t see how many skeins or ounces of yarn were needed. I would like to use yarn I already have in my stash but need to have an idea of how much is needed.
I think this is going to be my next crochet project, it looks simple enough that I can pull it off (especially with the very helpful video), and the end result looks quite neat too!
I have a question-how many stitches do you end up with in row 2? I added 35 stitches to the original chain. a multiple of 7, as stated. But now I have an odd number of stitches. If I had started with 196 I would end up with an even amount of stitches. Should rows 2 through 6 be even or odd number of stitches, including the chain 3 as a stitch. Thank you for any help you can provide.
I am also having trouble with stitch numbers.
7I am so confused..how many stitches should I have after row 7 of shawl?? Or after row 6?? Help appreciated.
I just love this beautiful shawl I am more of a knitter , so your step by step video is perfect and so clearly explained , I am definitely going to do this,
for the fall , how about a “midi lenght ” straight skirt to wear with boots?
I am amazed that you do not sell your patterns on ravelry , you deserve to .
thank you for sharing with us .
Love your patterns. I made the boyfriend sweater for my granddaughter. She loves it! Can wait to make the pocket shawl (for me).
I can’t wait to try this pattern! Shawls with pockets are in demand this year. Thanks for giving us something different.
Hello!
In the picture above the girl is wearing also a very beautiful blouse, is it still crochet..? Can you tell me if you happen to know the pattern for that beautiful blouse too..Thank you!!
This is so beautiful! I can’t wait to make it.
Any idea of the stitch gauge for this pattern?
I love this pocket shawl pattern! I’ve struggled with loving the others I’ve seen and this is the first one I love working up and the look of! Thank you so much for sharing. I can’t wait to finish and work on some of your other beautiful patterns 🙂
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUSITY IN PROVIDING FREE PATTERNS. IT IS APPRECIATED.
Row 8 ends with chain 2 skip 2 sc in last stitch.
Your pattern says to end with chain 3 skip 3 sc in last stitch.
I am ending row 8 this way, too. Did you just continue the next row with 2dc in ch2 space, dc in next sc, 3dc in ch3 space, etc?
Hi Carrie
Made your pocket shawl pattern and it turned out beautiful, now working on your crochet shrug. My work is slanted slightly, just wondering if that’s natural. Love your work
Help! My shawl is too short. My initial foundation chain was longer, but now it’s only 48” long. I would just make another panel and stitch together, but I used a self-striping yarn. Any suggestions?
steam your shawl with an iron or steamer. Pull it the size you want. (dont apply iron, just the steam)
will this fit any size person. thanks
The model in the photo is 5’8″ but if you need it longer/shorter just add/minus 7 chains
Hi Carrie. I am only 5 feet tall so would I still just take 7 rows off.
How many skeins of weight 4 yarn, please? Thank you!
900 yards.
I absolutely live tjus, im working on 1 now. I was wondering what the chain multiple is. The 196 chain isn’t quite long enough for me, but it will fit my daughter’s.
Thank you so much
Hi, my name is Linda Holwagner and i am interested in some of your crochet shawls and not familiar with computers to well. and was having some trouble trying to find out how to download your patterns. If you can give me some information on this I would appreciate it. I am interested in the Pocket Shawls that you make.
Thank You
Linda Holwagner
have finished this for my partner and she and her friends love it.
Just learnt to crochet this year recovering from a smashed heel.
One of the more interesting to look at, nice but simple patterns, very country/festival look.
The harvest one next for my sisters.
Toby
Oh no, I’m almost finished and I just measured! I am only 43” long, I’m assuming the measurement of 56” is prior to the fringe? Just checking before I frog it and begin again! Thanks!
Hi, in rows 8 and10 it st st, I don’t understand. I’m getting ready to start the pattern and yours is so pretty! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Becky
Thank you Carrie for this wonderful pattern! After several false starts and redos, I was able to complete the shawl in time for my sisters birthday. It came out absolutely beautiful.
right in the middle of this shawl….it seems great…thank you
I appreciate the video. I used thicker yarn, so fewer stitches needed. Bernat Blanket and Big Twist Cuddle. They are 6 thickness, using L Hook. I put pocket inside pocket. I added to middle of collar and did hood. I then went around the hood to bring the edges in, then extended the middle of the back. On later versions, I started with the shawl part adding at least 28 stitches so allow for pockets (14 on each end, but 21 each better). I did back post 21 on each end to allow folding up with single crochet. Five rows of the double crochet was wide enough pocket. At the bottom, after closing pockets, start at the back and extend continuing with the 2 and 3 chains, then come back double crochet like usual. Four or five rows was enough extra.
For the first edge, can close pocket with single crochet continue across and close other pocket. Then double crochet across, Contine front and back like initial start 2 to 4 rows. This makes the collar.
I have pictures if you’d like. I made them for all ladies and girls in the family for Christmas. Remember, I have thicker yarn, so rows andextra stitches would be different for thinner yarn.
I just finished my shawl with pockets, and I love it. Great idea for Christmas presents next year! Thank you!
Loving this so far. It actually is easy to follow, and this is coming from someone that usually needs a chart to follow. I’ve done 22 rows so far, and it’s laying flat and soft. I tend to lose or add stitches, but so far it’s working great. For others needing to know how many sc in row 2, 1 have 193. Many thanks for this pattern!!
Err, actually row 2 I had 194 sc in total for pattern to work.
Thank you thank you thank you a million billion times for a FABULOUS pattern, but most of all for your EXTREMELY helpful and illustrative video, you RULE!! I have been crocheting for many decades now, and was always stumped at the written FPDC, it just didn’t register in my feeble brain, but your fabulous video just rocked it right home and I can’t help but wonder how stupid can I possibly be??? (That’s a rhetorical question!) At any rate, my friend found your pattern and asked me if it would be ‘easy’….ha! I have now got the first one almost done and 2 more to go! THANKS AGAIN!!!!
How long should the shawl be? I only have #3 yarn so I may have to chain differently to get the same length.
Thank you for your fabulous patterns, I have used your Harvest Moon and your Crochet Shawl with Pockets. Both worked up beautifully. Thank you so much for your creativity and your generous sharing spirit. Nine shawls done for Christmas!!!
I’m just now finishing my second Crochet Shawl with Pockets. Whoda thought this would be such a HUGE hit with my East Coast friends! the length is perfect and its an easy yet interesting pattern. I used a heavy yarn, Joann Fabrics Big Twist, Heather (3 skeins per shawl). The weight and length are perfect for a cold climate. I added doggie faces that I crocheted with a fingerling yarn. Added just enough pizazz to offset the solid color. Thanks again to Carrie for a wonderful pattern. Believe me, your cold weather friends will love it.
I came cross your video when I was looking for a pocket shawl to crochet for a friend undergoing chemo treatment for breast cancer. This beginner crocheter found your video very easy to follow, which I truly appreciate!
I posted a picture of the shawl on my FB page and everyone loved it. I decided to treat myself to one, and did it in a variegated yarn, with a slightly larger hook. I absolutely love it and am looking forward to some slightly cooler weather so I can wear it. I’m now in the process of making another one for a friend because she loves it so much!
Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us!
Would this be the same size for a plus-size person? Or should I make it bigger? Thank you!
I’ve been wanting to make shawls for some time. I’d like a child’s pattern as well.
Leeta
Need a tutorial on t pattern
My first time to find your tutorial. I think it is great. Just finished making the shawl. I’ll be looking for more goodies. Thank you!
