I think the best thing about this beanie hat is that it can be made to fit any size head. The Shannon Beanie is crocheted sideways meaning the foundation chain you begin with determines the height of your beanie. So if you want a more fitted look that what the pattern calls for you will simply do less chains at the beginning.

CONSTRUCTION

This easy crochet beanie follows a flat construction meaning rows are worked back and forth instead of in the usual round. The best thing about crocheting the hat in this manner is you will be able to measure as you go by simply wrapping the hat around your head until it fits.

When you are happy with the width of the beanie, and it fits you perfectly, we will then slip stitch (or use a yarn needle to seam) the short edges together. Finally we will use our yarn needle and long tail and weave in and out throughout the crown of the hat, and pulling tight to close the top before sewing it closed with a few stitches. I added a faux fur pom pom to mine but you can leave it as is.

Yarn – Knitcrate Knitologie Swirl – worsted/weight 4/aran/10 ply – 200 yds/100g per skein.

Hook – size 5mm

The above table is the actual circumference and height of the head. When crocheting your initial foundation chain you can crochet to the actual height measurement given in table for a fitted beanie look. For a slouchier look it is recommended to add approximately 1.5/2″ to the height indicated in the chart.

As for the circumference of the hat, you must remember that the yarn/hat will stretch when it is finished so my advice would be to crochet in rows until you have approximately 2″ less that what is given in the chart.

CROCHET SHANNON BEANIE PATTERN

Ch 53 (or any number of chains to your preferred height but keep this number odd)

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 7 ch, hdc in next st and in each st across until 3 sts rem, sc in each of the last 3 sts, turn.

Row 2: ch 1, scblo in next 3 sts, *blhdc in next st, flhdc in next st, rep from * across until 9 sts rem, hdc (through both loops) in next st, scblo into each of the rem 8 sts, turn.

Row 3: ch 1, scblo into each of the next 8 sts, *flhdc in next st, blhdc in next st, rep from * across until 4 sts rem, hdc (through both loops) in next st, scblo into each of the rem 3 sts, turn.

Row 4: ch 1, scblo in next 3 sts, *blhdc in next st, flhdc in next st, rep from * across until 9 sts rem, hdc (through both loops) in next st, scblo into each of the rem 8 sts, turn.

Rep rows 3-4 until the hat is big enough to wrap around the head. DO NOT FASTEN OFF

So by now you should be at the brim end of the beanie. Next we will fold the beanie in half so the two short edges are touching. Slst from the brim all the way up towards the crown.

Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Next you will use your yarn needle and long tail and weave in and out at the crown. Continue this until you have weaved all the way around the crown.

When you are finished weaving all the way around you will pull your yarn tail slightly so the crown closes. Be careful not to pull too tight or the yarn will snap! You will then secure with a few stitches and fasten off.

Add a faux fur pom pom or leave as is to enjoy.
