Learn to crochet this quick and easy beginner friendly crochet cropped cardigan. The Ériú Crochet Cardigan is designed with a knit look ribbed stitch and cropped length, perfect for layering over shirts, jeans or dresses.

When designing the Ériú Cardigan I wanted something that was light, cropped and had a knit look about it. I absolutely adore anything knitted but hate that it takes so much longer than crochet to create something. So with a few basic crochet stitches I created this gorgeous cardigan.

Usually my cardigans are really oversized and quite long so I decided to change things up this time around. With that said, this cardigan is a tiny bit oversized, not too big though. If the cropped length isn’t to your taste this cardigan is easily customizable to change the length to your preference.

The Ériú Cardigan is constructed sideways, meaning the initial foundation chain will determine the length and the number of rows you make determines the final width of your cardigan. There is no increasing or decreasing involved in the making of this cardigan, so this project really is ideal of beginner crocheters.

YARN

The Ériú Crochet Cardigan uses Fluffy Day yarn from Hobbii. This yarn is quite easily one of the softest yarns I’ve worked with. One would easily think this yarn is made from mohair, however it is actually made from 100% acrylic. Fluffy Day is a weight 4 yarn according to the packaging but I would lean towards the thinner side of a weight 4. Light and airy this yarn gives a delicate and feminine touch to any crochet garment. The yarn comes in several shades, so there is something for everyone.

Fluffy Day yarn has a beautiful brushed look, similar to mohair so if this is what you are looking for in a sweater or cardigan then this yarn is a must have to your collection.

SEAMING TOGETHER:

Lay the back panel on a flat surface. Next lay your two front panel on top of back panel. Using a yarn needle and your long tails seam across both shoulders.

Next lay entire piece ouf flat with wrong side facing up. Take a sleeve and fold in half lengthwise and mark the top of sleeve at the fold. This will be the centre of sleeve. Now with stitch marker still attached to sleeve you will now attach to shoulder seam. Using yarn needle and long tail seam sleeve to shoulder. Repeat on the other side for your second sleeve.

Now fold your cardigan over with wrong side still facing out. Seam along under edge of sleeves and down along sides of cardigan.

Turn cardigan right side out.

Attach yarn to the bottom inner edge of cardigan. Ch 1 and sc all the way around inner edge of cardigan until you reach other side. Turn.

NEXT 2 ROW: ch 1, sc around inner edge. DO NOT FASTEN OFF.

With cardigan facing you, and on the right side, count 8 sc up, place first marker, count another 8 sc up and place second stitch marker, and finally count another 8 sc up and place your third stitch marker. This is where we will make button holes. Feel free to place your’s where you want.

Continuing on from where your hook is now:

NEXT ROW: Ch 1, sc in each st until you reach st before stitch marker, ch 3 (you may need to add more chains here according to size of button) skip st with stitch marker, sc in each st until you reach st before next st marker, ch 3, skip next st, sc in each st until you reach the stitch before you next and final stitch marker, ch 3, skip next st, sc in each st all the way around to the other side. Turn.

NEXT ROW: ch 1, sc in each st around, making sure to place 3 sc in each of the buttonholes created. Turn.

NEXT ROW: ch 1, sc in each st around. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.

BUTTONS:

Wrap yarn around index finger 6-7 times. With your 3.5mm hook insert into centre of hole, pull yarn through and ch 1. Make 70 sc in the centre of hole. Then slst into next available sc to close the round. Fasten off leaving long tail.

Insert tail end into yarn needle and make a few stitches at the back of button to close it entirely. Fasten off leaving long tail. Go ahead and make 2 more buttons.

Sew your buttons to cardigan. You are now finished your Crochet Ériú Cardigan. Enjoy!

Hi there! What are the horizontal widths of the panels of the cardigan? I’m using a thicker yarn so a size small is too big. Love your work! ❤️

Hello I’m making this cardigan now but I’m using style craft chunky. I’ve done 30 rows for the back panel I think that’s big enough but not sure. I’m making a small did you get the your answer. Im wanting the sizes for using thicker yarn not sure if to carry on ??

When is the smaller hook used? I’m guessing that the smaller hook is used for the ribbing but I’m not sure.

There are instructions for making the body longer in the pattern.
You can add chains to the foundation but you have to make it match the front pieces too.

Hello Carrie, I love this pattern. Do you have a pattern for a hooded cardigan for men? I was going to attempt making a wide long enough scarf, then attach a back section and sleeves. Do you think that would work?

Would like to do this pattern but when I went to order the yarn, some of the reviews of it say it pills badly. How does your cardigan look now?

How many yards do I need? Some brands make all sorts of lengths… so I’m not sure how much to buy.

I just finished one of these! I wanted to post a picture, but, it will not copy :(. Pattern and directions (both written and video) are excellent! Now, going to make another one in a longer version for me.

Pattern is simple but not optimal and the creator doesn’t respond to comments here or on YouTube. Whats the point of posting a pattern without assisting other people to make it? Also pattern doesn’t include measurements which makes it difficult to scale based on size and various yarns.

I’m finishing this sweater, which I love and my daughter has already claimed it! I’m stumped on the buttons because I haven’t been able to get 70 stitches inside such a small space. Is there a video or something to reference showing how to get this many stitches in it?
